I'm admittedly a newbie to XMP and NOT a coder. Please excuse my ignorance as you read this. I'm looking for information and clarification.
I'm a software USER. I'm a DIT in the film industry. Much of my responsibility is to provide the editorial department with proxies that are color corrected and sound sync'd. In this process, the metadata is paramount in allowing media to later "link" back to the files (both audio and video) that they were created from. Premiere is becoming more prevalent all the time. One problem I have with using it is finding a reliable way to get the metadata from my color, sync and transcoding program to follow the proxies into premiere. (In my case, Assimilate Scratch). This problem and search for solution led me to XMP in general and exploration of it's prospects.
It seems to me that XMP is more than just metadata. If used right it can be used for automation. I may be totally off base, but this is why I am writing this post.
Question:
Is it possible to use XMP to automate processes within premiere?
An example would be:
Let's say I have 10 clips I need to import. Those 10 clips have 10 corresponding LUTs (color correction tables) that go with them. If those LUTs had the same file name as the files, would it be possible to have the XMP data automatically be used to associate and apply the LUT upon import?
The idea is this:
I do my color correction and sound syncing in another program. (Assimilate Scratch, Davinci Resolve, etc). Instead of actually transcoding the footage to new files, couldn't I use XMP to embed the data of that work into the original files. This would allow my editors to use the originals, but have them color corrected and sync'd via data. This would allow the color settings to be toggled off and on rather than embedded. It would save a LOT of time and drive space.
I Realize that any of these answers require coding, if they are possible at all. Though I'm not a coder, I'm a person in need of a solution. Isn't that where all coders get work?
